Health Coverage

FEEDUC

Analyze your personal case And choose your health insurance

If you are in one of these three situations, we can advise you on the steps to take and suggest health partners.

European Social Security Card

Either the student is still a beneficiary of one of his or her parents and must apply for a European social securitý card, renewable every 2 years...

The application can be made by telephone. This card will allow the student to receive free treatment in all public health centers in Spain.

If the student is still covered by one of his/her parents' social security plans, you must contact your parents' complementary health insurance company to make sure that their coverage is valid even while studying abroad (especially for repatriation from Spain to France if it should occur during your stay in Spain to study).

Students who move abroad will often, and in all cases from the age of 21, no longer be able to stay on their parents' social security.

CPAM in France

If the student cannot remain covered as a parent's beneficiary...

... he/she should contact the CPAM of his/her place of residence in France to find out if he/she can continue to be covered as an individual.
Normally a French student has social security rights for one year after the end of his/her last year of university studies.

Be careful also to find a mutual insurance company to complete the necessary complementary coverage (repatriation, etc...).

Voluntary or Private Coverage in France

After consulting the CPAM, find out whether the student who is going to study in Spain can continue to be covered by his or her parents' social security system, or maintain his or her own individual coverage and thus benefit from coverage in Spain with a European social security card. If the answer is negative, you can contact other organizations.

The student in Spain will have to opt for a voluntary coverage with the French Expatriates Fund or for a Private coverage.

CFE (French social security with voluntary contributions) Young expatriates Students, trainees

Beware of the CFE: everything is often long and complicated with them, many students abroad go through a private system that can cover from the 1st euro of reimbursement including the share of social security.

Student health coverage directly in Spain

To join the Spanish social security system you must have:

  • a school certificate,
  • a proof of residence (lease),
  • be registered (empadronado) at the town hall of the place of residence and then make a registration.
  • have a Spanish phone number

The student is then attached to a health center to which he/she must go in case of illness.
The disadvantage of the above options is that in theevent of a serious accident, if the student is not affiliated to the Spanish public health system, he/she will not be repatriated to France or will have to pay for it.

Health cover for non-European (EU) students

For students from outside the European Union, private health insurance is almost always required.
