Where to study veterinary medicine in Spain? Good to know

There are not many universities that offer the study of veterinary medicine in Spain.

Even though this program is offered in more schools than in France, it is also difficult for a student, especially a foreign student, to access this program in Spain.

What you need to know to choose your veterinary studies in Spain ?

As with dental, physical therapy or business school studies, for which we have already discussed access on this blog in previous weeks, you must first focus on :

fundamental points

This is the basic criterion:

  • A higher education institution that is not accredited cannot issue a Spanish state diploma which is mandatory to practice the regulated profession of veterinarian in France. regulated profession of veterinarian in France.
  • To our knowledge, in Spain there are no schools that are not authorized by the Spanish State.
Some of them, however, have not yet had students graduate on this course, so it is not possible at this time to know the real level of future veterinarians who will graduate there.

Your skills as a veterinarian will come from your theoretical knowledge AND your experience with all categories of animals you may have to treat.

Make sure that:

  • the location of the university clinic is convenient to access,
  • This clinic has the necessary and recent equipment to treat all categories of animals,
  • the organization of this clinic can offer you enough patients to treat during your internship.

Some universities offer the possibility of doing an internship in the university clinic during your studies, which is an undeniable plus for your training.

As with all other programs, you will have to make your choice according to your profile (grades, financial means in terms of available capital or ability to borrow, level of Spanish, etc.)

The following factors should also be considered:

Each of the two educational systems has its advantages and disadvantages, but both offer the same degree at authorized universities in Spain.

  • The advantage of the public system is its price, since the studies are financed by the Spanish taxpayers.
  • The main disadvantages of the public system are that you are not "always" welcome and that the average required to enter is very difficult to achieve for a student who did not attend high school in Spain(see blog post on the "nota de corte ").
  • The advantage of the private system is its accessibility to foreign students for those with a good level of Spanish and sometimes the possibility to go through a year of preparation for veterinary studies.
  • The main disadvantage of private universities is that the fees can be high or very high, but this is an incentive for students to really work hard in order to succeed in their studies and to start getting a return on their investment as soon as possible by entering the workforce.

When you don't have the budget to pay for years of veterinary studies at a private university, choosing to attend a public university may be a good idea.

  • Check the "nota de corte (10-point grade) that allowed you to enter the previous year at the university you are applying to.
  • If your 20-point average divided by 2 to find your 10-point average is lower than this, you will likely not be admitted.
  • If your score is more or less the same as the "nota de corte" of previous years, have a plan B because you won't know until July if you are among the lucky ones to be admitted.

Don't forget to include the additional costs:

  • file opening fees,
  • reception fees sometimes mandatory for foreign students,
  • seat reservation fees, etc.

This choice is important because it can condition :

  • your travels,
  • the number of languages to be mastered,
  • your monthly budget...

Focus on looking at what seems like details at first glance, for example:

  • the region in which you are going to study may require you to learn another co-official language in Spain to be able to access internships (a lot of energy to devote to this additional learning to the detriment of the knowledge you need to acquire for your veterinary studies)
  • the cost of living is not the same everywhere in Spain where decentralization is very important with salaries, rents, etc. very different from one region to another.

And, finally

2 criteria can also help you finalize your choice:

The first of these is the required level of Spanish.
If you don't have the necessary prerequisites, don't hesitate to prepare yourself for a year, by doing a pre-university year in Spain, by doing a year of language immersion in Spain or by joining a biology university with intensive Spanish courses in France.

  • If you are afraid of the city, avoid downtown campuses,
  • if you are afraid of the countryside, don't study on an isolated campus in the middle of the countryside,
  • Choosing a lifestyle that suits you can affect your quality of life and sometimes even your academic success.

Here's what FEEDUC thinks you should know about the criteria to take into account if you're considering veterinary studies in Spain.
